What The Media Isn’t Telling You About The Syrian Chemical Attack

Updated September 5, 2013

Added material from interview with Bashar al Assad by Le Figaro

Le Figaro:  Mr. President, the Americans and the French have accused you of perpetrating a chemical attack on the 21st of August in Ghouta, which led to the death of hundreds. Do you have evidence to suggest that your army did not launch the attack?

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad:  First of all, anyone making such an accusation is also responsible for providing the evidence to substantiate the allegation. We have challenged them to present a shred of legitimate evidence, which they have not been able to do. Since their foreign policy should be tailored to suit the interests of their own people, we have challenged them to present legitimate evidence to their own public opinion to substantiate their claims; again they have not done so.

The statements by the American administration, the West and other countries were made with disdain and blatant disrespect of their own public opinion; there isn’t a body in the world, let alone a superpower, that makes an accusation and then goes about collecting evidence to prove its point. The American administration made the accusation on Wednesday and two days later announced that they would start to collect the evidence - what evidence is it going to gather from afar?

...It is now crystal clear to everybody that what is happening in Syria is not a popular revolution pushing for political reform, but targeted terrorism aimed at destroying the Syrian state. What will they say to their people when pushing for military intervention: we are intervening in Syria to support terrorism against the state?

"If they don't have proof or evidence, then how are they going to stand up to the American public opinion and to the world public opinion and explain why they are attacking Syria?"

Omran Ahed Zoabi, the Syrian information minister, was interviewed by France 24 about the alleged poison gas attack in a Damascus suburb.  In the interview Zoabi reaffirms that the Syrian government is not responsible for the massacre. He discusses the UN inspectors' mission and deplores the way the Syrian crisis is being treated in the Western media. In the United States, for example, one rarely sees or hears anything from the Syrian government while the media parrots the statements and claims made by the so-called rebels, many of whom are not even Syrian.

In an interview with CNN, Zoabi challenged the United States to present its proof to the rest of the world that the Assad regime was responsible for having used chemical weapons.  "If they don't have proof or evidence, then how are they going to stand up to the American public opinion and to the world public opinion and explain why they are attacking Syria?" Zoabi said.

In January 2013 there were reports in the media that the Obama administration supported the idea of using a false-flag attack with chemical weapons to be blamed on the Assad regime in Damascus.

U.S. BACKED FALSE-FLAG CHEMICAL ATTACK IN SYRIA - Daily Mail, January 29, 2013

The U.S. government supported using a false-flag chemical attack in Syria to be blamed on the Assad regime, according to this January 29 article. The article (now removed) begins: Leaked emails have allegedly proved that the White House gave the green light to a chemical weapons attack in Syria that could be blamed on Assad's regime and in turn, spur international military action in the devastated country.

"Leaked Documents: US Framed Syria in Chemical Weapons Attack" presents documents and evidence to support its case that the rebels, not the Assad regime, are responsible for the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

Since the reported chemical attack last Wednesday, the Obama administration and members of Congress have been pushing the line that Syria’s President Bashar al Assad ordered the use of a chemical weapon on the outskits of Damascus.

According to CNN, one U.S. officials claims “There is nothing credible to indicate that the rebels, either the Syrian National Council or even al-Nusra Front, have used chemical weapons,” the official said. “Only the Assad regime is responsible for chemical weapons use.”

But that statement is false. When it comes to this latest incident, at this point we don’t know what kind of chemical might have been used. Nor do we know who used it. Some of the claims early on from “unnamed government sources” were that sarin gas was used in that Damascus suburb. The use of sarin gas would point toward the Assad regime, would it not?

Not necessarily. What our national media isn’t telling you is that in May Turkish security forces found a 2kg cylinder with sarin gas after searching the homes of Syrian militants from the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Nusra Front. Where did the sarin gas come from? We don’t know. But clearly, Al Nusra Front has access to sarin gas and was planning a use for it.
